John first came to SHOC for help in 2008. Having been homeless for a few months, he found himself the victim of assault, which is sadly very common among the vulnerable homeless. Whilst at the police station to report the attack, he saw a flyer for SHOC. “My self-esteem and outlook on life were very low, so reading that SHOC could help with food and accommodation and help me get work, was a ray of hope ”

John became a regular at SHOC, receiving help but also helping out when he could. His self-esteem and confidence grew in SHOC’s environment of care, trust and respect. Having completed courses in computing, cookery and gardening, after much perseverance, and to everyone at SHOC’s delight, John found a job working as a full time kitchen porter at a local hotel. In John’s words, “I am pleased with the turnaround of myself since 2008 and I can laugh when I look back, but when you have problems whether being homeless, hungry or lonely…you don’t laugh”
